I did as I was told. Slowly, exhaustion taking its effect I dragged myself away. I wasn't surprised by their reaction, it hurt sure but when I though of how much I had hurt them all I couldn't help but know I deserved it. i hoped they'd go to Maya, help her, help figure out what happened, see if it could be undone...that was an idea. A tiny ray of hope filled me and I turned towards Maya's apartment on the way trying to work out what had happened. 'The voice.' That I could remember clearly though I couldn't say exactly what it had done, i just knew there had been a voice and it had somehow made me do it...try to kill her oh g-d actually kill her. 'But it wasn't me' I rationalised. 'It was the voice.' 'No' another part of me argued. 'It was you. THe voice only reiterated your own thoughts, played on your fears, everything leading to your actions came from you.' I couldn't deny it even to myself so looking up at Maya's windows from the street I hesitated. Could I face them? Try to get them to find out what happened? Should I just leave, get out of town and pray they could forget all about me. I stood there driven forwards by a need to clear myself but held back by trepidation and the worry that perhaps I couldn't clear myself, perhaps it really had been me who killed Aila.

I needed to hurt something. So diid Pepper. So we went hunting in the sewers. With every staking or beheading I saw the red hair, the smile. I roared. She had taken the light. I would show her the darkness.

(((Dojo)))
A hard dirve whirred to life as over head spy satelites, hacked open by the teenaged AI, began bringing strange images to his attention. Mal watched the girl he thought of as his sister, along with the one called Pepper, tearing through the sewers in an angry rage. Something had happened, that much was obvious.
Mal 'sat back' and thought.Something was obviously happening, but what, he couldn't understand. Best to observe for now.
(((Maya's apartment)))
"I understand, how you feel..." I began.
"Do you?" Maya screamed. The emotionless facade dropped.
"Do I?" I hissed. "God damnit, Maya, this is the second time someone I care about has vanished within three feet of me and there was nothing I could do about! Or do you think I just stood back and let he do it?" Maya was struck dumb by my rage. "This is even worse that that bloody container, because this time, I saw the woman I love do...something with my niece. My eyes showed me something, my brains telling me it's true, but I cannot believe it! I refuse to believe it! Charlotte wouldn't hurt Aila of her own free will like that, I know it! And I'm going to prove it."
I stormed out before either of them could say anything. There was something seriously wrong here. And I was going to find out what.
(((Elsewhere in the LA)))
"Oh, such rage," the figure giggled. "Oh, you've grown so much. Soon, my Dark Knight. Soon, it will be play time."

"Charlie?"
I had been walking past on my way home, drenched and looking like a rat, when I had noticed Charlotte just standing there. Definately looking tormented as well, that was never a good sign.
No reply so I raised my voice a little. I didn't know her as well as the others but she looked as if she could use a friend.
"Charlotte? Are you okay?"

I sat there on the ground, trying to clear my mind. My throat hurt from yelling, and besides, there was noone left to yell at. Josh was rubbing small circles on my back with a hand. I leant against his shoulder as tears fell silently. "What happened?" I asked quietly. "I dont know." He replied, trying to sound calm. "But..." He swallowed, "Doc is right you know... it doesnt seem like Charlie." "I know." I said dryly. "But i saw- you saw it, saw her..." Bile rose in my throat as i thought back, "And i couldn't feel anything in her... i would have felt it!" "Maybe it was something more powerful than that... God, i dont know Mai, but..."He trailed off with a sorrowful sigh. "She's not dead." I said quietly. "Huh?" "I can feel her as such..." I continued, "But... Aila isn't dead. I just know." "I know." He replied. "Me too." "We have to find her." I said louder, sitting up straight- this is what i needed, something to do. "We have to find out what happened and where she is... but Josh?" "Uh-huh?" "If we cant prove Charlie didn't do this..." He nodded solemnly, "I know, Mai... I know."

I barely registered that Nicki was there I was so worried about what to do. I felt like I was picking petals off a flower To go up Not to go up To go up Not to go up. A modern day Hamlet...well in the sense of indecision maybe. Suddenly I turned to Nicki, "Do you think she'll kill me?" "What?" Nicki asked in confusion looking shocked. "Will she kill me if I go back?" "Who? Why would someone kill you?" "Maya. Will she let me explain." Nicki looked incredibly confused. "Charlie, Maya wouldn't kill you. She wouldn't hurt any of us. Whatever it is that's the matter i think you need to go talk to her." I nodded but didn't move. "Charlie?" Nicki urged. "I'm moving. Am I not moving?" "Uh no." "Oh, right then." I said blankly and walked forwards like WW1 soldiers going over the top, walking straight into a hail storm of bullets on no man's land. Like those soldiers on the somme I just kept walking, up the stairs until I dot to Maya's front door. I raised my hand but couldn't bring myself to knock. Someone behind me however leant forward and rapped sharply on the door. Out of the corner of my eye I realised Nicki had followed me up but this piece of information fell to the back of my mind as the door swung open.

"Why...Would.....She...Do....That?" I gasped after staking the tenth vamp of the night. "Jessy?" I turned to the shifter hoping for answers.

I watched as Mai stood in the doorway and frowned at the tear tracks on her cheeks. "Mai what happened?" I looked over to Charlie to see her edging slowly away from the door and I grabbed her arm before turning back to Maya, "And why does she think you want to kill her?"

"I do. I'm going further in. Bye." I set off with a bound into the dark of the sewers. Not a vampire could rest until I felt better. But of course, I would never feel better.

I couldn't speak, not while Charlie was looking at me like that. A multitude of emotions were barraging my mind- fury and betrayal at what she'd done, disbelief that she ever could, but also guilt, almost shame that i could make her feel like her expression suggested. I squeezed my eyes shut and turned away, sitting heavily on the sofa. Nicki followed me in, "Mai? Damn it, answer me- what's going on!?" "Charlie tried to kill Aila." Joshua said. Nicki's eyes flew wide, "What?" She looked to Charlie, who had her back against the wall opposite the front door, tears rolling down her cheeks. "Charlie...?"

"I swear I didn't mean to hurt her." Someone snorted derisively and I pressed myself further back into the wall. It had been a mistake, a big mistake to come back. Now there were four people who looked like they could murder me. "HOnestly, the voice it-" "Oh yes, the voice." Josh interrupted sneeringly. "This wonderful voice which told you to kill my daughter. What's happened to it now then?" "I don't know, Josh I swear though it wasn't just me. The voice was there...it did...something...i think it made her disappear." I saw a flash of sympathy in Doc's eyes and turned to him. "Doc please, you know I wouldn't do that, please, you have to believe me." He looked torn between wanting to believe me and being unable to. "Charlie, I didn't believe you would, I would have trusted you with my life but I saw you...I just don't understand what this voice could have been." "Please." I begged. "Please you can find out, can't you? I don't want it to come back, i don't want to hurt anyone else." "MAi?" Josh, Doc and Nicki turned to her. "She tried to kill my daughter." MAya repeated stonily. "What if she's right though Mai? What if there was something else?" Doc asked calmly. I could almost see the cogs of Maya's mind whirring, pushing against great resistance as I stared at her pleadingly almost as one might look at a judge about to pass sentence. "Two days." She said. "You have two days to find out and I'm going to watch you every minute." She said staring daggers at me. I nodded, but the trepidation was not gone, i had no idea where to start trying to clear myself from something I wasn't completely sure I was innocent of.

"I'm coming too," I said. They all looked at me. "I told you, i don't want to believe you could something like this. It just isn't you, Charlie, I know that. I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt. But I'm coming along. Just tell me where you want me, girl," I added gently. "I'm there."

I climbed down a manhole, right smack bang in the middle of a nest. The vamps smiled. Finally, food delivered. 10 minutes later they were dust. Noone kills my cousin.
