I let the younger shifter hug me and shook away the feelings I'd been harbouring. Life was good and soon another life would be among us.

((Right I am determined to get involved in some damn threads! Nearly missed this an all... pfft))
I ran into the hospital and swerved my way around various wheelchairs and stretchers until I found the others all standing or sitting around and talking. Nervously I realised that I felt slightly awkward. It had been a while since I'd been with the group and I felt almost like an outsider as I noticed various jokes being shared.
Man I'd missed so much, maybe I'd just missed even more. I bit back a frown and tried to ignore the feeling of intruding
"Did I miss anything? Is she okay?"

"If you mean going on patrol when she *knew* it was dangerous?" I said dryly. There was no way I was going to let her forget that moment of stupidity. "Yeah, she's fine. Or at least as fine as a nineteen year old in labor could be."

"Have you taken any drugs?" a nurse asked as yet another contraction died down- they were coming only minutes apart now.
"No!" i snapped again, "I'm clean, i swear!"
"She is." Joshua agreed fervently. The midwife shook her head,
"Well not much we can do about that now anyway- this baby is coming, whether we like it or not. I need you to breath for me, deep breaths."
I did as i was told, holding Josh's hand tight. I could feel another contraction coming, and did as the midwife insructed. I yelled out, squeezing harder. Joshua whimpered a little, but i barely noticed.
((blah blah blah, reaaaally not writing all that...))
"Come on!" The midwife said, "One more!"
This time i yelled so loud it hurt- i who had been through all sorts of pain and near death without screaming. I clamped down hard on Josh's hand, and felt something giveway as he yelled out too.
[Sorrysorrysorrysorrysorry] i cried mentally.
And then there was a different sort of wail. I flopped back on the bed, breathing hard.
"Mother Goddess." I gasped. One of the nurses gave me an odd look, and i guess she didn't realise that to me that was no different from saying 'jesus christ'
The midwife came round to my side, a tiny bundle of green sheet in her arms. I let out a little gasp as joy as she passed her to me.
"It's a girl." She annouced. I nodded,
"I know." She felt so light in my arms, so tiny. Her warm little body wriggled a little as she choked little wails- it was the most beautiful sound i'd ever heard. Tears escaped my eyes as i looked down on her, Josh with his arm around my shoulders again, his expression one of bliss despite his injured hand. I looked to him,
"Aila." I said.
"What?" He replied, a little confused,
"Aila. It means 'light bearer'."
He smiled broadly,
"It's perfect." He said, kissing my forehead, "Our little light."

I got to my feet as the Doctor walked out. Charlotte was on one side, Jessy the other.
"Well?"
"She's perfectly fine," the doctor said with a smile. "And the baby too. It's amazing, but she looks full term."
"Can we see her?" Jessy asked excitedly.
"Let them have their moment," the doctor advised. I nodded, turning to face Avalon who just smiled a little. I, on the other hand, was smiling a lot.
I had family. Blood family. I had my sister, and now, a little niece. And I had Jesys and Charlotte.
Life was finally good.
