"You mean the whole opening up, letting people in and not wondering when the knife's going to some out the other side?" he asked. He WAS one of the most paraoid people in the world, he knew EXACTLY what she meant. "Yeah, probably. But maybe it's alright. Keeps us from going batshit."

I chuckled, again! I shook my head, "Maybe." I replied. "I guess at least if I'm getting all fluffy I have someone to watch my back." I smiled at him, and suddenly realised that I was exhausted, and I was sure that it had a lot more to do with this conversation than the earlier fighting. "Tell you what." I said, "I'm knackered, and I'm not up to setting wards round your place tonight, so you should kip here, and tomorrow I'll set you up. Right now though, I need to sleep."

"Sounds like a plan," he said with a nod. "Which is about 100% more than I had when I stumbled in here lookin' like I went three rounds with Mike Tyson. Thanks," he smiled. "Ya know, if we went back to Australia, we could always go hunting. Always wanted to know if the Bunyip actually existed."

I raised an eyebrow, "The what now?" I asked. "Hang on... hold that thought. Explain tomorrow when my brain fuctions. I'll reset the wards incase your friend come looking... can I suggest not trying to leave til I come back this time?"

I smiled, shaking my head, and turned to leave, setting the wards as I went. "See ya in the morning." I called, before sealing the door. I wandered home deep in thought. It had been a very odd night. Aside from that niggling part that was certain all this would lead somewhere bad, most of me felt... content. It had been a long time since that word had even occured to me. Maybe there really could be a part of my life that didn't have to be all doom and death. When I reached my apartment I had a sudden urge, and picked up the phone, dialling the only number I knew. After a few rings, a groggy, fairly pissed off voice said, "Hello...?" "Hey, Faith." I replied, "It's Maya." "...Mai...? Wha... it's 4am... whats wrong?" "It is?" I honestly hadn't realised, "Oh. Sorry, uh, nothings wrong... that was kinda..." I felt fairly stupid now, "Just you asked me to check in once in a while and I... well... I'm ok." Silence was the reply. "Faith?" I asked after a while. "Uh, yeh, I'm here." She said slowly, "I'm glad.... and thanks for checking in... thats... good." I regretted calling. She was shit at these conversations, as was I. But somehow I felt I needed to let her know that there was a little bright spark in my dismal life. "Sorry to have woken you." I said then, "I really didn't realised the time. I'll call again soon." "Yeh... Uh... Did you wanna talk about it or something...?" I smiled, knowing the answer she was praying for, "No, no, it's all good." I replied, "We'll talk soon. G'night." "Night." I hung up, smiling again, as I had far too much tonight. I stripped off, climbed into bed, and curled up, falling asleep in moments with a contented smile on my lips.
