"Thats all? I give you that and you can look up literally anything? Anything that has ever been in existence? I'd say it's a gift but it seems like it'd be a curse as much as it is a gift. A crapshoot if you get the wrong keywords." An ability like that could solve a lot of problems but to know everything... Wasn't part of the joy of life is it's ability to allow one to learn?

"Or if you ca't find the right words," there was an edge of sadness to his voice. "My past. A price to pay far to high. I don't know who I truly am."

"Does anyone know who they are?" A little too methaphorical for her tastes but it was true, at least in how she saw it within herself.

"A better idea than I have," his retort was a little more scathing than it should have been, but it was kind of a touchy subject. "'Mal' is just a name I was given by the one that found me."

"Nothing else I can really say to that." Obviously this was a touchy subject, why go into such a topic when you didn't want to discuss it?

"An example of the price of knowledge," he said randomly, looking at her with a smile. "I read the knowledge of the very planet itself. People aren't much easier, but..." he looked away. "this is only the sum of my physical knowledge. Much of it is written down after look-ups. Your name came up while I was researching Dana and her conition. to help her."

"And do I dare ask what my 'look-up' revealed?"

"That you're trustworthy," he said. "That you hate what the council used to stand for and would do anything for Dana. Which I presume is why you're here," he shrugged. "I've learned since coming to LA that in-depth look ups without permission can bring some... displeasure. I only did so with Dana because she had an...episode when we first met. It was the only way to figure out how to help her."

"I suppose knowing a lot about someone you shouldn't would get you in trouble. But from what I can tell is that Dana has been doing much better since coming here. I don't care for the fact that she kept running off without me, and for all I know you could quite possibly be evil, and just as likely not. Nothing personal just cautious. For now I figure she's been having few and fewer episodes and seems to be happy. Hurt her in any way and trust me though. I well pool as many resources as I can to erase you from existence. Again, nothing personal."

Mal nodded thoughtfully before turning to Dana. "And how has your control been going," he asked. "I have noticed you've struggled less in our more recent sessions."

"It's been getting a lot better. Only had a couple this week. Though it's made my training exercises much easier. Turns out they haven't changed much in centuries."

"Yes, what little I have of the Councild doesn't say much for their ability to adapt," he said, his tone not conveying any malice, more interest. "It surprise me, sometimes, that they lasted as long as they did."

"The illusion of power?" That was more Buffy in her head but not only from actual memories but having met the woman herself.

"Possibly, though I'd like to see how many people they paid off to get the protection they did," Mal said. "If Jackson's research is correct, there should have been several hundred kidnapping charges in their history."

Dana shrugged. "I don't remember anything about that. If it happened the slayers must have just been very young."
