Hopes: Maya believes that hope is for the niiave

Personality: Withdrawn and untrusting. With everything she has faced in recent years, Maya relies only on herself. She finds it easier to keep everyone at a distance, rather than deal with the complications that come with acquaintances.
History:
Maya was raised in England, with her loving parents, her older brother, and her younger sister. She was an average, happy child, who in her teen years, as so many do, began playing with the idea of wicca. Surprised as she was when little spells began to work, she kept it a secret, afraid that her friends would think she was crazy for even suggesting it. When her father announced that they were going to America, she assumed it was another of his work trips, and she was thrilled... until he added ‘permanently’ to the end of the statement. Then she was furious. They left almost immediately, and Maya had to leave behind everything she knew- her friends, her home, her life.
When they arrived in America her fury did not abate. She barely spoke a word to her family, and rejected the prospect of new friends, focussing inwardly instead, and studying the magicks more seriously. It took a long time for one kid at school to get through to her. A boy named Ben. He slowly gained her trust, and they became friends, and eventually more than that- Maya began to fall in love.
As her barriers fell, she reconciled with her family and found a small collection of new friends, and life began to get good again. Then one day, about 18 months after she had come to America, Maya was approached by a demon. At first she was excited... she had learnt about them in her wiccan studies... but quickly she realised that this was no longer a childhood game. The demon told her that his master required her services- they needed a human spell caster to complete some task. Maya refused out right. She could see that no good could possibly come from the spell he was describing.
It seemed, for a short while, as though that was the end of it. She naively assumed that they were afraid of her power and would leave her alone. The truth was that they knew how vulnerable and human she was... and had no problem exploiting that. One day Maya arrived home from school to find her parents and her sister dead, a cruel message scrawled across the wall in blood ‘YOU WILL NOT DEFY US AGAIN’. Maya collapsed right there, the grief consuming her. It was only when there was a knock on the door late that night that she managed to move, and when she opened it, there was her brother, alive! She burst into fresh tears and held him so tightly. When she let him in and asked what had happened, he happily told her the truth. He had been reborn... and now so would she be. So heavy was her pain, she almost let him do it- what did it matter? But at the last moment she found some strength, and drove a splintered chair leg through his un-beating heart.
After that, she was in an almost dream like state. She found the demon nest, and none left the building alive. She did not know quite how she did it... she had never known such power, and might never again. There was no conscious train of thought, only fury and pain. But the leader, the one she knew had turned her brother, was not there. She vowed that one day she would find him.
Once again Maya retreated into herself, and only Ben was able to keep hold of her, though he feared every day that he would lose her. She trained herself, physically and magically, to be ready next time... but of course she wasn’t.
When the men in cloaks came for her, she and Ben ran, and he tried to protect her. The last remaining flame in her heart was snuffed out when she watched him die, and then she just fled, never stopping until it became clear that no one was following anymore. She then lived a solitary existence, hiding from the world, trusting no one, and killing any demon that crossed her path.
Nearly a year after Ben’s death, she was approached by a woman named Faith, who explained to her who the men in cloaks had been. She told her that she was a slayer, and offered her help, so that she would not be lost to the darkness like others before her. Faith, and a man named Rupert Giles pulled Maya back from the edge of her sanity, and trained her in the ways of the slayers. But Maya would not stay with them any longer than absolutely necessary. She thanked them, and left, heading for LA...
