I stood in the tiny bathroom clutching a small white stick. There was a babble of noise outside and a banging on the door.
“C’mon Charlie” A voice I recognised as Amy's called.
"I'll be out in a minute." I called back, my stomach churning anxiously. I glanced at the small stick and promptly threw up.
"You ok in there Charlie?" Jay asked from outside. I couldn't answer, instead my legs crumpled and i collapsed onto the floor.
"Charlie?" Jay called and banged on the door. "Charlie, you ok? We're going to be late." I just sat, unable to make a sound, my breathing rapid and shallow. I heard a loud bang and the door burst open, Jay flying through it. i quickly hid the stick in my dressing gown pocket and tried unsuccessfully to stand up. Jay lifted me easily and carried me to our bedroom where he lay me on the bed. From down the corridor I heard the whining of teenage slayers.
"Eww gross, there's sick in here."
"And the lock's broken."
"Yuck."
"How am I going to wash my hair now?" I closed my eyes in despair, sometimes I couldn't believe those girls. Jay was sitting next to me, wiping my face with a wet flannel. As his face became sharply focussed I tried feebly to smile at him.
"I'm sorry." I whispered. "I don't think I'm going to make the meeting."
"There's no way, i don't want to push you but it's really important."
"I know." I sighed. This meeting was the culmination of much of our work since i had first returned to England. "Give me a few minutes, I'll see."
"Alright." Jay leaned forward to kiss my forehead but i pushed him away. "Charlie what's wrong?" He asked frowning.
"I'm just sick." I replied. "It's no big deal, probably just the flu or something."
"I don't just mean today Charlie, I mean generally. Since you came back from LA you've been acting so strangely." He was right too, sometimes all I'd wanted was to be close to him, sometimes i wouldn't let him touch me. Those were usually the nights he went out to the pub, and when he came back he'd touch me anyway. i couldn't blame him though, i deserved it for holding onto him like a yoyo, pulling his strings whenever I wanted. After what I'd done to him in La as well, and what i'd done to other people, wellit was justice really. besides he wasn't doing anything new.
"It's just been harder than I expected." I replied after a pause. "It'll pass, no big deal." I heaved myself into a sitting position. "Do you think you could help me get ready?"
