This isn't fair. I thought. ONE night off, how much is that to ask? one tiny weeny night, and of course its the night that all the bad guys come out to play. Joshua glanced sideways at me, and i realised i;d been thinking rather... projectively. "It's possible that is BECAUSE you took the night off." He commented. I pouted, "Well thats just totally inconsiderate." I said. I sighed, "COme on then, lets toast these bastards- no one better have touched our picnic." I added the last as an after thought.

A small owl hooted in what soundede like muffled laughter. It sounded like laughter because it was. "Gosh, they're really having a bad night," I said to myself I decided to take out any bad guys so they can enjoy their date. I flew off, smiling at the glow of pure happiness that Mai was radiating.

(((Uh, I'm starting to get very confused, but didn't Rory and Jessy hook up AFTER Mai and I were already dating? This is still our FIRST Date!)))
Half an hour later, and fifteen dead monsters, not slain all at once, we were back at our picnic sight, and amazingly the food and blanket were still there. Then as we passed through the shield Mai had sat around it, we had our answer as to why.
"So? Is the night ruined yet?" I asked as we settled back down, but more for talking rather than snuggling. What can I say, neither of us felt in the mood right now for that. And I would much rather enjoy a relationship with a woman's mind as much as her body, thank you very much. And those mind-meld sessions don't count.
Mai giggled as she settled herself and seemed to consider her answer. Or reading my mind to see why I asked the question. I just didn't want things to end yet.

"Na. the night's not ruined." I replied, actually feeling a little hyper, "Slaying can be a drag sometimes, but it actually gets me kinda high... which is kinda odd, and slightly disturbing... but hey, i guess it's what i was built for." "I wonder who that philosophy came from." Joshua said sarcastically. I grinned, and shrugged, "Hey, the girl mighta gone through some stuff, but it doesnt mean she was wrong." "Never said it did." He replied "I know." I smiled. I lay back on the rug, looking up at the stars. "It's actually a beautiful night." I said quietly, thoughtfully.

I swooped around, hooting. I looked for any traces of evil within a one mile radius of the two love-birds. Lo and behold, a group of 4 vamps were creeping through a small park. At the sight of a sixteen year old girl (me) who was clearly alone they began to drool. They stopped when I turned into a panther and killed two of them with some well placed bites. Soon they were all desposed of.

Looking over my shoulder, I turned back to Mai and answered, "Yeah, it is. Panthers and all."
Mai giggled. "It was a nice gesture of them to do that, especially after all the trouble with . . ."
"Yeah, and do you have to bring that up?" I interrupted.
"Sorry," she said, giggling again, and half a minute later I was laughing right along with her at the memory.
"But seriously," I said as the laughter finally died down, "let's talk. Tell me about the first time you met Faith and Willow. And you can leave out the painful stuff, just talk about the good things."

"Gonna be a pretty short story, in that case." I said quietly. Joshua smiled sympathetically, "You dont have to..." He began, but i shook my head, "Na, i want to..." I looked up at the stars, working out where to start. "It was a while after i'd become a slayer. I didn't exactly know what was going on, but i'd looked stuff up... i knew who the bringers were..." I trailed off for a moment. "I left home after the bringers came, just moving as much as i could. I'd seen demons and stuff way before that, and i knew, somehow, that something big was happening." I chuckled, "So i tried to keep away from it, i didn't need any more complications in my life... First time i met Faith..." I smiled softly, "I was in a club. Y'know, the whole letting the music take over thing? I found that i could shut out the rest of the world like that... She and the others were searching for slayers- it was in the summer, before they'd split up. I'd headed to a town a little way from here, and they did some spell, tracked me down like they were the others. So, yeah, Faith walked into that club, and... y'know the vamp feeling? It's not half the feeling you get when another slayer walks in... I turned and saw her the second she arrived." I grinned at the memory. "SHe had this like school girl grin on her face, like, 'this is my kinda place.' She approached me on the dance floor, and it was wicked wierd, cos, well..." I chuckled, "As YOU know, i dont go for girls, so when she just came right up to me, and kept dancing, it was wierd to say the least. And then she grabbed my hand, and passed me this card, and that was it, she left. It was bizzare. The card had a hotel address, her name, and the words, 'Wanna understand the dreams?'" I rolled on my side to look at Josh instead of the sky, and chuckled, "I was kinda pissed off." I said. He grinned, not asking about my parents, or why i was awkward about when the bringers came... and i was glad, like he said, depressing stuff is no fun. "So, yeah, i went to the hotel, maybe a little stupid, but i had to know, y'know? And when i got there, there was Faith and this little blonde having this huge row about how you can't just 'give them a card cos its a little more complicated than that.' ...I just sorta said, 'hi.' and Buffy was totally shocked, and... well i think Faith liked me from then on." I grinned.

"So what did the Queen B of Slayers say after you just showed up?" I asked, dying to know after such a story. 'Queen B of slayers' was actually Faith's nickname that she always used when talking about her elder counterpart. At least that's what she always called her when she came up in conversation while she, Willow, and Maya were helping me with my problem.
Mai grinned and rolled back onto her back, looking up at the stars. Taking a slow, deliberate, check-out of her body, after a minute of that I joined her in stargazing, waiting for her to finish the story.

"She couldn't believe that i'd come. She immediately decided that it meant i was far too much like faith." I chuckled, "So i pretty mcuh became faith's responsiblity. I told her... a bit of my story, and when the magic came up, Will got so excited. She was all, ooh, apprentice, and i was all too happy to go with it. The two of them taught me a helluva lot... and i think willow knows more about my past than she lets on, you know, telepathy an' all... which probably means faith does too... but they dont dwell on it, they let me be who i want to be now, yknow? Not living in the past." I smiled, "I guess i kinda love them. They were the best friends i'd had in quite a while."

"Well, OK, it's only fair that I give a story for a story," I teased as we watched a couple of meteors burn up in the atmosphere, creating a couple of shooting stars across the sky.
"So, what do you want to know?" I prompted her.

I rolled onto my side, propping my head up up on hand, "What can i ask?" I asked. "Anything." Joshua replied. "Anything?" I grinned. He chuckled. "Hmm..." I said, "What do i wanna know...?" I looked at him, grinning, and said, a little hesitantly, "Well... have you ever been in love?"

I frowned a little and then returned my eyes to the sky above with a deep sigh.
"You don't have to . . ." she started to say but I interrupted her.
"No it's only fair. I thought I was in love. Once before. I wasn't really. I had hoped I was in love. She was . . . the perfect girl. That's not saying much for kids in Middle School. I did everything with my powers, yeah the whole no self-gain thing but I didn't know about that yet, I did everything to put and then keep us together. In the end it didn't work out because I finally came to my senses and realized while we might be good friends and maybe even childhood sweathearts, both of us could see we weren't meant to be. So I guess the answer to your question . . . is no, I've never really been in love before."
"OK, my turn, have you? Ever been in love?" I asked.

Goddess couldn't those vamps see that you do not creep around LA when Mai and Josh are on their first date. I dusted all the vamps and glanced around for some more fun. Seeing nothing, I checked the wallet I'd got off one of the demons. $200, a platinum credit card, and a Natwest debit card. Oh, and a peice of paper with his pin numbers on it. They are so stupid.

Dam it. I thought- am i completely stupid? Of course he would ask it back. I sighed. "I loved someone..." I said. "I dont know if i was in love... but i loved him." I paused, "... it didn't exactly work out." "Can i ask how it didn't?" He asked tentatively. "He... he was taken away from me." I replied, still skirting the answer. "Another girl?" He scoffed, "The guy was crazy." I chuckled, smiling softly, but shook my head, "No... it wasn't another girl... it was..." I lowered my eyes, "It was the bringers."

"Ouch," I winced.
"I won't say I understand completely, but I can empathize Mai," I told her quietly. "I didn't have it as bad as you did, but I've had my powers since before I was 15 years old, and by the time I was sixteen, I was constantly being targeted by demons and other stuff like that for my powers. Never had the problem of having someone taken away from me by the demons... until..."
"Yeah," she interrupted me, probably having read the memory from my mind as I recalled it.
"What a pair we make, huh?" I laughed, watching the meteor shower.
"Yeah," she said again, softer this time.
