I shuddered, vague catches of conversation reaching me. "No." I murmured. "Maya?" I heard Charlie gasp, "Mai? can you hear me?" "No hospital..." I said. "You need help, Mai." Doc said. "no hospital..." i repeated. "Home..." "What?" "'partment..." "Apartment?" I heard Jessy say in confusion. "She wants us to take her to her apartment?" "Thats crazy- Maya- you'll die!" Charlie cried. I shook my head very slightly- the biggest movement i could manage. "No hospital." i said again, "Please..." I forced my eyes open, looking right up into Doc's, "Please... trust me?" I gasped.

I looked at her a moment, then let out an annoyed growl.
"Bloody Slayers, too bloody stubborn... Jessy, grab my phone out of my pocket, speed dial three. It's Des. Tell her we need a lift, tell her what happened," I looked back at Mai. "We'll do it her way. But if it gets too bad, i swear, ai, I'm taking you to the hospital. No buts. So stay concious, 'kay?"

I nodded softly. "Thanks..." I said. He turned to the guy who'd called the ambulance, "You'll stay with the rest of them, right?" "Of course... but where are you going?" "I have to help my friend." "Shes worse than most of them... shouldnt you..." "Dont argue with me." Doc snapped, "Charlie, Jessy..." "We're coming with you." They said in unison. He sighed, "FIne. whatever." I felt him pick me up again with a snap of "Eyes open Mai!" I forced them open, "Slave driver." I murmured.

"Learned from the best," I said with a smile. "You try raising a baby at teh age of five. Best teachers in the world," didn't mean to let that slip, but i was too worried about Mai to think straight.

Had i been more with it, i would have commented, or asked. But instead, i just made a mental note not to forget, and to survive to ask later. I heard the skidding of wheels, and a yell from above of, "Francois!?" "RIght here Des..." "Merde- dat dont look like no party..." She commented.

"Whoever told you it was a party..." I stopped as i noticed what car she was in. "You are paying for the ignition and whatever re wiring needs doing, you know that right?"
"It is de fastest car you have," she said defensively as I got in the backseat with Maya. Charlotte squeezed in with us, leaving Jessy to get in that front.
"But hotwiring my baby?" I groaned.
"I did not hotwire de car," Des said, pointing at teh ignition. The cover had been removed and teh tool she had used to turn the ignition afterwards was sitting at my feet. "Easily repaired."
"Just get us to Mai's house," I said. Soul or not, some things about Des would never change. "Double time."

"Doc, did you ever think that I might get there faster? Ever heard of by the way the crow flies?" He nodded, understanding. "I'll get some stuff ready," I called as I swooped off.

"You 'ave such interesting friends, Francois," Des remarked. I rolled my eyes.
"Yeah, but they're good people," I said. "Oh and Darkmoon? Grace, dust, Maya, injusred. That's the gist of it."

I could hear voices, but they sounded far off. My eyes were open as ordered, but what i saw was blurred and out of focus. In a voice barely more than a whisper, but that never the less made everyone else go silent, i murmured, "O tempo está funcionando para fora. Teares da morte. Eu pray que minha alma vai ao lugar melhor. Guarde-me, goddess da mãe." I wasn't even fully conscious that i was saying it, it came naturally, like my body admitting the truth despite my mind holding on. "Maya?" Doc said, almost angrily, frowning. "Eu pray que..." I trailed off, "Teares da morte..." Des looked back over her shoulder with pain in even her eyes. Doc looked up at her, "You understand her? What did she say? Des?" "...Prenda sobre, os jovens um." I heard Des say in the distance. "Des!?" "We must hurry." Was all she told him.
((Love the Google translator- Maya said 'Time is running out. Death looms. I pray my soul goes to the better place. Guard me mother goddess.' And Des said 'hold on, young one.' Its portuguese!))

I understood the general gist of what Mai was saying (My dad had been fluent in g-d knows how many languages and I had picked bits up here and there.) "Mai you're not going anywhere except home. You're gonna be ok, Mai you have to be. We didn't spend all that time trying to save you when we were in Cleveland for you to die on us now. Joshua came back from the dead for you Mai the least you can do is not go there. There's too many people holding onto you Maya. We wont let you go so easy."

I wished i could smile, or squeeze Charlie's hand, or do something- anything to assure her that i was trying my best, doing all i could to hold on.

"Des, the cars had some modifications since you last drove it," I said. "The little red buttone, for instance? That ain't NoS. It's Juice."
"Now, we are getting somewhere," Des said, reaching for the button. "'Old on, mes amis!"
Ten minutes and a car chase later, we arrived at Mai's place.
"Hang on, little sis," I said as we got out of the car. "We're nearly there. Just hold on," I couldn't fail again. I couldn't.

I opened the door unsmiling. I looked as Doc rushed past me. "I found a box of stones. Some were labeled healing." I spoke hopefully.

"I hope she can hold conciousness til she tells us why we're here," I muttered, carrying her to her flat.
