"From what I've heard, she sounds it." For an instant the woman in my mind flickered to a tall woman with long silky brown hair, green eyes dancing behind spectacles. Then it changed back to the beautiful young girl. In my mind I saw her older, more mature. She was beautiful. Mal must be proud. I looked into the teen's eyes before realising I should be looking at the web cam. "There's another thing we have in common. We've lost mothers but found a father."

"A valid point," Mal conceeded. "He does seem to have that sort of presence. Unfortunately, he has a tendency of putting others first."
"Why's that unfortunate?" Jessy asked.
"He bottles everyting inside," Mal said. "I can't tell you a lot, but I can tell you that he's had a very hard life, and never shared the whole story. That's dangerous, and i worry about him."

"I guess I do to. I've never heard much about his life but he broke down once. It terrified me. If something went wrong now, well, I just don't know if he could cope. It scares me. He seems so strong, he is strong but inside he's fragile. Karen isn't helping. I think sometimes his want to hurt her overuns his moral values. I just wish I knew so I could help." It was strange. I was telling Mal everything that I'd never tell any living being but I thought of him as a living being. As a brother.

"For now, we watch over him the same way his done for us," Mal said. "Help him when he needs it, keep him strong when he's ready to collapse. Until he opens up, it's all we can do."

"I know," Mal said gently. He wished he could hug her, but that was out of the question. He didn't have arms. "But he's built a fortress around himself that so far we've only begun to open. If we force the issue, it could do more harm than good. We have to wait for him to open up, or else we may never know what pains him."

"I guess." In my imagination I was already turning my room into Mal's. I wasn't really attached to my room. But it would take work.

"Now, with that settled," Mal said. "Tell me a little about charlotte. He seems to clam up a bit when I ask her. I think he's trying to keep me from thinking he's trying to replace Mother."

"She's a watcher's daughter. I think she had a shakey past; it was hard for her to admit what she felt for Doc. I've got a picture somewhere here..." I looked in the bookshelves, eventually pulling out a photo album. "There. The night she admitted her feelings she sent the night at Doc's. And the next day she didnt seem to have had much sleep."
