Sitting at the edge of the roof of an apartment building - he hadn't bothered with the name nor gone inside, simply used the outside access stairs and drainage pipes to get to the top, Kyler looked down on the city.
The sun was just setting and the moon was already up. The short section of the day when people locked themselves nice and cozy in their houses and the creatures of the night waited for the last few rays of light to disappear from the sky before they came out. It seemed the most peaceful time... and after the last few days, Kyler longed for peaceful.
He was yet to get used to the reality of these night creatures - his only real knowledge prior, save for brief encounters, was from information and training passed down from Martin, and what he learned at Stella's school. So much for normality.

Just my luck to find the one apartment block in the whole of LA where the smoke alarms work at the slightest hint of smoke. Cursing the provisions against fire (I could fly, was I really going to care if my building went up in flames?) I took the stairs up to the roof at a steady trudge, matches and cigarettes stuffed into my pocket. It was, I had decided, my evening off from work, hunting, partying, you name it. I was going to slob around in a comfy jumper and some pyjama bottoms and watch crappy tv until I fell asleep. Right after, that is, I had a smoke.
I wasn't a regular smoker or anything, but it was calming, and comforting, and reminded me of home and y dad and all the memories that involved the smell of a cigarette rising into the air. When you're a shifter, smell matters just as much as a familiar taste or sight. Anyway, I would have got right down to it had I not been confronted with a familiar face. "Uh, Kyler. What'cha doing on my roof?" Day off, day OFF, my mind was screaming, but I could hardly ignore someone on the roof of my apartement building. "Here for the view?"

Kyler was somewhat startled by Jessy's arrival, it let him know just how off-guard he had let himself become just now, deep in thought, he was obviously unaware of his surroundings. He hid it well though, regardless of feeling as if he had almost fallen off the side of the building... her roof? She lived here? What were the chances? It wasn't exactly what he wanted to happen, so much for peaceful. Nevertheless, some company might be nice... he thought to himself.
He turned his head and looked back at her, "You could say that." he replied simply, "You live here?" It was an obvious question, but that's what 'normal' people do, right... he could find perhaps some normality, even in this random encounter.

"No, I just climb random not-too-tall apartment buildings across LA to look at the view, like most people do. Yeah, I live here, apartment 220. For the time being at least." Moving over to the edge where he was sitting, I gave the horizon a quick search. Some of the view was hidden by taller buildings, and on the ground the peace was disturbed by the hundreds of tail lights and brake lights racing along the city streets. Everything odwn there was fast, and hard and modern. Looking up though, i could understand why Kyler had been lost in his thoughts, The sky was at that watercolour stage, where it looked like some four year old had gone mad with the gold and the pink and the purple, blending them together in some mad painting. It was calming.
Pulling a cigarette from thepacket, I placed it in my lips and, sheilding it from the gusts of wind that whirled around the roof occasionally, lit with a match. Taking a puff and then exhaing out towards Hollywood, just in case Kyler hated it or something, I turned and offered him the packet. "Want one? Or are you gonna tell me it's bad for my health?"

"I don't smoke." He replied, looking back at Jessy for a moment, "and it's not for health reasons, so I'm not going to give you a lecture."
Not the time to begin to open up, Azoth, concentrate. He thought to himself as he looked at the sky. He was able to ignore the cars on the street, it was usually much louder than it was at this hour, and so the noise was much easier to drown out with his own thoughts.
"You said you're lving here for the time being..." Kyler decided to try to resume some form of conversation, "I guess you move around a lot?"
Yeah, not the most thought-out question ever, but Kyler was clearly distracted. He didn't look at her this time as he asked the question, his eyes, instead, remained on the sky, watching as the sun set and the last rays of light slowly began to be blocked by the earth's mass.
