"So basically, you scratch my back, I keep Mother Hitler off yours?" He asked, rubbing his chin. She had a point. And he'd have a reason to 'keep an eye' on her in case Mummy dear had some PIs in the area. If that meant figuring her out, well, nothing wrong with that, right? "Sounds like a good deal. What's the catch?"

"Yeah, pretty much. Just jazz up a CV - you've got a criminal record, right? What with the breaking and entering? If not, forge one. And there's no catch, except that you'll be working for my mother, the Anti-Christ." Ok, maybe I was exaggerating, and maybe I took betrayal a little hard, but I was allowed to. She hadn't see me in years. "So, you won't start on Monday?"

"I think I can mock one up," Doc said, thinking of one of the fakes he had among his possession. Should hold up under the scrutiny of an over protective mother. "Monday's fine with me. It'll give me an excuse to hang around a bit longer."

"If you'll take some advice, I'd use the first paycheck for some soap and a place with a shower." I nodded and held my nose. The resulting action put me off my balance and I wobbled dangerously for a few moments before regaining control in a less than elegant manner. "See, perfectly capable of taking care of myself."

"Obviously," he said sarcastically. "approaching stinky men in a graveyard to hire as faux bodyguards. Just be sure to warn me when you're mum sends PIs," he snickered. "though I'm sure we could come up with a way to convince her that's a bad idea."

"You'll find I can avoid people just as well as I find them. But as for PIs, they kind of stick out like sore thumbs. And besides, I'm subtle. She'll just think I'm morbid." I'd spent an inordinate ammount of time in my home town's graveyard too, even in the early years, so it was hardly smething new. "She might ask you for reports though. You have some imagination, right?"

"Went to class, spent some time at the campus cafe with some guy," Doc said with a smirk. "Caucasian, brown hair, brown eyes, average looking, nothing major. Left without a phone number, possibly a class mate. Oh, and no police actions as yet. Good enough?"

"Some guy? Average looking? Left without a phone number? Offending me is not part of the job description. This is my mother, and hey, also me. I want her thnking I'm dating and dumping the next Jonny Depp. Which, by the way, I totally could. The no police thing is good. Model citizen, that's me." Ok, I couldn't help it, I giggled my way through the last part. At least it was more dignified than a snort.

"If she thought you were dating the next big thing in Hollywood, she'd be down here in a shot to make sure he wasn't up to something, which would make it harder for ME to point the guy out," Doc informed her. Okay, so he probably COULD find someone to play the part, but dealing with an irate mother was the last thing on his bucket list. In fact, it didn't even make it in the top 100 things to do before he died. "Average means nothing to worry about for mummy dear, and no surprise visits for us."

"Ah. I need to correct your viewof my mother. When I say mother, I mean it only in the biological state. Rats have a closer connection with their hundreds of offspring than my mother has with me. I haven't seen her in twelve years. I want her jealous and guilty and confused, but believe me, nothing is going to tear her away from the inbuilt bar in her condo. And you wouldn't be pointing anyone out because, again, I son't want you to do this. Call it charity of spirit." I shrugged and hopped off the gravestone. "Besides, hiding, easy. I'm sure you're not half bad too, when you're clean."

So, uninterested mother attempting to buy her way into her life, huh? Sounds douchey.
"Well, you have a point," he said. "Don't worry, I'll come up with some nice juicy gossip for her to get sloshed over. And hey! I really don't smell that bad... do I?"

"Excellent. But don't put yourself out on her account. Not a real job, remember? In the past few days you've worn the same set of clothes for at least twenty four hours. You're not wearing them now though. You ate something spicy... curry? I don't know, that was a while ago. Sleeping bag sweat is a big factor. And blood, which I'll attribute to the vamp and your life style. There's a damp stench too. But then I smell more than your average girl. But hey, it'll keep the vamps and werewolves away!"

"Well... damn..." he said flatly. He didn't think it was THAT bad. The more you know. "I should probably start looking at hotels or apartments then. Thanks for the offer. Should be fun," and informative. Very informative indeed.

"You do that then," I said before trailing off, my eyes drifting to a point vaguely over his shoulder. "Oh hell, we have company," I swore. Lies, lies, lies. Oscar-winning lies, yes, but still lies of a kind. What can I say, I wanted to make an exit by not making an exit. I'm a contradiction like that. The moment he turned to look I had ducked down behind the tomb, transformed and scuttled away, invisible and unnoticible in the high grass. What, after all, was one rat?

"I can't believe i fell for that," Doc muttered, looking back to see Jessy was gone. "Huh. sneaky. "alright then, boss lady. You got yourself a deal."
