it is the year between school and university. You can take it to go traveling etc

yupyup. You dont have to, of course. Im not cos i wouldnt have a clue what to do with it. Going start off to uni (provided i get in) I actually just finished my form for uni application (aaaah) But my bro took a gap year. Worked in a chalet in a ski resort in france for 5 months-> basically meant he had to do a bit of cleaning, and cook kids dinners, and then got most of the day to snowboard. (and got paid a bit) Rather groovy i thought.
