"I know that," I said. "But...after the last time Charlotte was here, I can't help think that maybe she blames me. Or the baby."

(((K))) "Doc, I come in here loads and I always go see the newborns. I fall in love with them, and they aren't mine, and I was evil. Charlie will love the baby, even if she resents it at first. Then all the resentment will move onto you." I smiled brightly. "Then, you go and beat up her boyfriend and hey presto, no resentment."

I could feel the tears welling up but then there was a knock on the door and three people came in-two women and one man. "Can we help you?" Maya asked brusquely and they held out badges. "We're detectives Scott and Banner and this is Dr Samuels." The male detective said. "We would like to have a few words with you." He added looking at me. "She's just had a baby, can't this wait?" Maya asked protectively. "I'm afraid not, we wont take long." "Mai will you take Zoe to Doc? He hasn't really seen her." i said quickly and handed Zoe to her. She reluctantly took her and left, looking backwards over her shoulder. "What do you want?" I asked. "There's been a report of bruising on your body that matches common descriptions of domestic violence." He started, not beating around the bush. "We would like to ask you a few questions and have Dr Samuels examine you to support our case." "Doc didn't do this to me. I said quickly. "Then how did it happen?" "I'm really into marshall arts, I guess it just got a bit to heavy." I lied. "I'm a pretty believing man but I don't believe you were doing martial arts whilst 8 months pregnant." Detective Scott said sceptically. "Fine, then I must have done it in my sleep. Pregnancy does wierd things to you, I've been sleepwalking and I've been really clumsy." "And how many doors that you might have walked into are fist shape?" He asked pointing at my arm where there were clearly knuckle marks. "Look, it doesn't matter, just Doc didn't do it." "Then let us examine you, take some measurements and DNA samples and we can rule him out." "What will you do once you've ruled him out?" I asked. "Find whoever that fist belongs to." I swallowed. That was what I had thought. "And what if I don't let you?" "we proceed with a case against Doc." "Can you do that?" "Yes. It will not be quite as well substantiated but we have evidence of his violent tendencies and do not need a statement from you to press charges. There's a good chance he'll be locked away for a while." "No, you can't do that." I protested. "I assure you we can, so if you want to clear him I suggest you let us examine you." "Can't I just make a statement in his defence?" "see the problem is that the most common reason people protect those who have been abusing them is because they still love them. From casual observance I would be inclined to say that you fit this description so I don't believe it would carry much weight." "But I was in England until yesterday and Doc was here." "So, will you please let us make a case against whoever it was who hurt you?" I paused, I didn't want the police to go after Jay. For one thing it would look so bad for the new council, for another I was scared of what he would do to me and for another it was only sometimes, only when he'd had too much to drink and that could happen to anyone. On the other hand though I didn't want anyone elso to get hurt. I turned the question over in my mind uncertainly.

"Mai, what's going on?" I asked.
"Charlie aske me to bring Zoe to you," she said.
"Zoe, huh?" I said, taking the girl out of her arms. "Hey, small fry?" She looked up at me and tried to grab my nose. As she did so, the blanket she was wrapped in slipped from her left shoulder. "Oh crap."
"Doc?"
"I gotta show Charlie," on the girl's left shoulder was a birthmark. The one the marked the Slayers.
"Doc, she's the got the plice in there," Maya warned me.
"They can wait there turn," I said, showing her the mark. "This is more important."

Without saying anything, I showed Jessy the Mark.
"And that means...?"
"Zoe's a Slayer," I said. I had a few choice words for the creep who made these choices.

"But that's really cool, isn't it? Another, albeit baby, slayer." I looked at him, puzzled.

"It means she'll have to live the life of most slayers. She'll have to deal with demons, vampires, and anything else that wants to destroy the world. She'll have to grow up with and around evil," I said walking over. "An with an over protective dad that is one of the hardest things a father can deal with which is why most slayers were taken away from their parents at birth." I looked at Jessy, Doc, Maya, and Zoe.

I shook my head, "No. Not necessarily." I said, "Things are different now Doc... there are hundreds of slayers. Zoe's life doesnt have to any different than it would have been otherwise. It's all good."
